Queen Sized Eagle Native American Lakota Star Quilt:
These sacred quilts come directly from Native American women who are using their ancient lineage of quilt making to uplift themselves and their families from poverty. The traditional designs and colorings signify the morning star, which is used as a guide on the spiritual journey. These quilts are traditionally given during sacred transitions, to warriors, or upon achieving great accomplishments. They bestow on those comforted a sense of unforgettable personal significance. When one buys, gives, or receives one of these quilts it is an honorary symbol that carries the sacredness of the Lakota tradition into your life.
These star quilts have long since been sacred, honoring symbols that are given at major life transitions, to signify accomplishments, or for a special gift. If you would like your intention to be woven into the quilt itself, you can include it with your order and the artist will infuse the product with your wishes.
About the People: The Sioux people live on reservations scattered across the Northern United States and into Canada. The Lakota’s are the largest tribe of the Sioux nation and inhabit the poorest section of the United States today. They have a long history of great warriors, powerful medicine men, and artistic and creative women. To experience yourself as Lakota is to see a strong sense of self determination to free your community from poverty and suffering. We have started the Tribal Traditions of the Lakota Sioux project to share the traditional arts and build an economy with the Lakota people. The artists who makes these quilts live on the Pine Ridge reservation, which is the poorest place in the United States, and poverty can be self sustaining for their tribe, with governmental systems that create dependence without hope of self empowerment. Global Peace Train (a non profit organization) has brought the resources and business tools the Lakota need to uplift themselves from poverty and break free of the systems that have trapped them for decades.
Our Goal: The star quilt project was created in collaboration between the Global Peace Train and the Lakota people to help uplift Lakota families from poverty. Through the generous donations of our sponsors, and the hard work of Lakota women, we can now provide these sacred quilts to people worldwide. Our goal is to create a sustainable e-commerce business which will allow the Lakota people and their grandchildren to make a living while sharing their sacred culture with the greater community.
About the Quilts: "Our grandmothers passed the traditional star quilting techniques down to us and now we are carrying their teachings. It is up to us to carry on the tradition and share them with the world, before the art is lost. These star quilts were originally made from animal hide, but when the reservations were made and free range hunting was restricted, our ancestors, began making the quilts from fabric and sewing them by hand. They symbolize the morning star, and the threads are understood to be threads that run through all of us, connecting us fully with all life and wellbeing. It is through these quilts we can honor our ancestors and remember we are always connected to our people and the earth."
Tradition: The tradition holds that when a baby is born, a great accomplishment is achieved or someone dies, a star quilt is made by women relatives. We have handpicked the best quilters and artists on the reservation to hand craft these quilts for the greater community, and to train a new generation of quilters to make these beautiful pieces of art.
